MAKURDI,
Benue State - A member of the Benue State House of Assembly has raised urgent
concerns over escalating daily violence in his constituency, where bandits
continue to kill residents even under the watch of security forces.
Peter
Uche, a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) representative for Guma I
constituency, issued a stark warning on Monday, describing a deteriorating
security situation that has left his constituents living in fear. According to
Uche, armed bandits are carrying out deadly attacks with impunity, often within
sight of security personnel.
The
lawmaker pointed to a particularly troubling incident that occurred just one
day before his statement, in which three people were killed and six others
sustained severe injuries. Despite the proximity of the attack to security
installations, no law enforcement officers responded to the scene, Uche
reported.
"The
situation has become unbearable," Uche stated, expressing frustration over
what he described as inadequate security response times and insufficient law
enforcement presence in the area. The legislator emphasized that residents feel
abandoned and unprotected, despite the reported presence of security personnel
in the region.
The
ongoing violence sparked widespread community protests on Monday, the 11th,
with residents demanding immediate action from authorities to address the
security crisis. Uche has called on military forces to improve their response
capabilities and urged law enforcement agencies to increase their operational
presence in affected areas.
In
response to the mounting insecurity, the lawmaker has also appealed to
constituents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to
authorities promptly. This community-based approach, he suggested, could help
strengthen local resilience against criminal elements.
The
Guma I constituency incident reflects broader security challenges facing Benue
State, which has experienced recurring episodes of communal violence and
banditry in recent years. The state has been a focal point of farmer-herder
conflicts and other security issues that have claimed numerous lives and
displaced thousands of residents.
