Prime Brief Media's Fact-Check desk verifies claims circulating in Nigerian public discourse, including political statements, viral social media posts, official statistics, public rumours, and other issues of significant public interest, particularly within Nigeria's Middle Belt.

Our Fact-Checking Principles

• Independence
  Every fact-check is conducted free from the influence of political parties, governments, advertisers, or any special interest group.
• Transparency
  We publish our sources, methodology, and reasoning so readers can independently evaluate our conclusions.
• Fairness
  Where possible, individuals or organisations whose claims are being examined are given an opportunity to respond before publication.
• Non-Partisanship
  We apply identical verification standards to every public figure, institution, political party, and organisation.

How We Select Claims

We prioritise claims that:

• Are widely shared or believed within Nigeria's Middle Belt.
• Have significant public interest or public safety implications.
• Can be verified using credible and available evidence.
• Originate from public officials, political actors, institutions, or viral online content.

Note: We do not fact-check opinions, personal beliefs, predictions, satire, or statements that are inherently subjective.

How We Verify Claims

Our verification process normally requires confirmation from at least two independent and credible sources.

• Primary Documents
  Government records, legislation, budgets, court filings, and official statistics.
• Expert Sources
  Academics, researchers, professional bodies, and recognised specialists.
• Direct Statements
  Responses from the individual or institution that made the claim.
• Credible Secondary Sources
  Established news organisations, peer-reviewed studies, and verified databases.

Our Rating System

✅ TRUE

Supported by reliable evidence and accurately presented.

🟢 MOSTLY TRUE

Largely accurate but missing important context or containing minor inaccuracies.

🟠 MISLEADING

Contains factual elements but is presented in a way that creates a false impression.

🔴 FALSE

Contradicted by credible and verifiable evidence.

⚪ UNVERIFIED

There is insufficient reliable evidence to confirm or refute the claim.

Publication Standards

Every fact-check article includes:

• The exact claim under review.
• The source and date of the claim.
• Our verdict using the Prime Brief Media rating system.
• The evidence supporting our conclusion.
• Links to publicly available primary sources whenever possible.
• A response from the claim's originator where available.

Corrections

If new evidence changes the outcome of a published fact-check, we update the article and publish a visible correction notice. We do not silently remove or rewrite previous fact-checks; updates are made transparently in accordance with our Corrections Policy.
