In a coordinated operation
over the weekend, troops of the Operation Whirl Stroke (OPWS) successfully rescued 11 kidnapped hostages and seized a substantial arms cache across Benue
and Taraba States.
The
offensive, carried out between Saturday, August 2, and Sunday, August 3, 2025, was spearheaded by Colonel K. O. Bukoye of Sector I, with
support from the Air Component and strategic ground blocking by Sector III forces stationed at Gindin Mangoro,
Wukari
LGA in Taraba. Simultaneously, troops descended on suspected criminal hideouts
in the Tse‑Ahur and Chito general
areas of Ukum LGA, in Benue.
Upon
contact with the kidnapper groups, soldiers acted with precision and
overwhelming force. Two suspects were apprehended, while others abandoned their
captives and fled the scene. A subsequent search-and-rescue mission led to the
safe recovery of 11 hostages,
comprising four women and seven men, all of whom received medical attention and are being prepared
for reunification with their families.
In addition to freeing the
hostages, troops recovered an impressive array of weaponry and ammunition,
including:

Numerous magazines and
rounds for various calibers

Smoke canisters and fetish charms
reportedly used for protection by the kidnappers
Furthermore,
the troops successfully destroyed the bandits’ camp and logistical
infrastructure, dealing a significant blow
to their operational capacity in the region.

The
head of OPWS, Major General Moses Gara, who oversaw the mission on the ground, commended the soldiers
for their professionalism and tactical discipline. He reaffirmed the force’s
commitment to rooting out criminal elements in alignment with directives from
the Chief
of Defense Staff, General Christopher Musa. General Gara also expressed gratitude to the Service Chiefs
and pledged sustained pressure on criminal networks throughout Benue,
Taraba, and Nasarawa States
