At least seven persons have been confirmed dead following a late-night attack by suspected armed herders on Channel One community, a border settlement in Ukemberagya/Tswarev Council Ward of Logo Local Government Area, Benue State. The assault, which occurred around 11:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 26, 2026, has left several others injured and triggered an exodus of terrified residents fleeing their homes.
A resident identified as Amos told journalists via telephone that the gunmen stormed the community along the Arufu-Wukari road, opening fire indiscriminately and causing widespread panic. "They came shooting everywhere. People ran in different directions. It was chaos," the resident said.
Community leader Joseph Anawah, who confirmed the incident to Prime Brief Media, identified six victims initially recovered. Those killed include Akor Gwakyaa, Msooter Gwakyaa, Aondoungwa Michael, Vershima Michael, Terna Michael, and Msughter Terzungwe. Several others sustained serious injuries and are currently receiving treatment in medical facilities in Anyiin and Ugba towns.
According to Anawah, the attackers, believed to be armed Fulani herders, arrived in large numbers on motorcycles and were heavily armed. He alleged that the assailants may have originated from a suspected camp in Shaor, a deserted village previously flagged in intelligence reports as a potential staging ground for attacks.
"The attackers came in large numbers and operated freely before retreating," Anawah stated. "Many residents have now fled their homes over fears of further attacks. The community is virtually deserted."
Chairman of Logo Local Government Area, Clement Kav, also confirmed the incident, stating that seven people were killed while four others sustained injuries. "They came, carried out the killings, and retreated. I have already briefed the Commissioner of Police and the Special Adviser on Homeland Security," Kav told Prime Brief Media.
Efforts to obtain official confirmation from the Benue State Police Command are ongoing. Police Public Relations Officer DSP Udeme Edet said she was yet to receive full details of the incident as of the time of this report. Escalating Insecurity Across Benue
The attack on Channel One adds to a growing wave of violence sweeping across Benue State. In recent days, similar incidents have been recorded in Agatu and Ushongo Local Government Areas, raising grave concerns over the deteriorating security situation across the North-Central state.
Community leaders have called for urgent intervention, including coordinated security operations and enhanced inter-state collaboration among Benue, Nasarawa, and Taraba states to curb cross-border attacks. The border location of Channel One, situated along a route that connects multiple states, makes it particularly vulnerable to armed groups who exploit jurisdictional boundaries to evade security forces.
"The attackers take advantage of our border location. They strike and retreat across state lines where our local security networks cannot pursue them," a community elder who requested anonymity told Prime Brief Media. "We need a coordinated, multi-state security response. What we have now is not working."
Benue State has been one of the hardest-hit states in Nigeria's prolonged farmer-herder conflict, with thousands killed and hundreds of thousands displaced over the past decade. Despite the deployment of Operation Whirl Stroke, a joint military task force, and repeated assurances from both state and federal authorities, rural communities continue to bear the brunt of armed attacks.
