President Bola Tinubu on Monday held a closed-door emergency security meeting with the nation's service chiefs and heads of intelligence agencies at the State House in Abuja.
The meeting comes amid mounting national outrage over the Nigerian Air Force airstrike that tragically misfired on Jilli Market along the Borno-Yobe border on Saturday, killing over 100 civilians, including children. The strike, which was intended to target Boko Haram insurgents, has drawn widespread condemnation and calls for an independent investigation from Amnesty International and other civil society groups.
In attendance were the Chief of Defence Staff, General Olufemi Oluyede; the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen Waidi Shaibu; the Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Idi Abbas; the Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Anele; the Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS), Oluwatosin Ajayi; the Director-General of the National Intelligence Agency (NIA), Ambassador Mohammed Mohammed; and the Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu. Also present was the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, alongside other top security officials.
The meeting also addressed the recent deadly attack on a military location in Monguno, Borno State, where a commanding officer and six soldiers were killed after their vehicle struck an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) during a counter-offensive against Boko Haram insurgents.
While no official statement was immediately released after the meeting, sources indicate that the President demanded a comprehensive review of operational protocols to prevent future civilian casualties and a renewed strategy to degrade insurgent capabilities in the Northeast.
