Senate orders crackdown on bandits flaunting crime cash on TikTok

A pastor has been killed by suspected gunmen during an overnight attack on Zinal village in Song Local Government Area of Adamawa State, the latest in a series of violent incidents that have rattled communities in the northeastern state.

The victim, identified as Pastor Emmanuel Ezeoikwe of a local evangelical church in Zinal, was reportedly attacked in his residence by assailants who struck under cover of darkness. The exact timing of the attack remains unclear, but community sources indicate that neighbours heard gunshots in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

According to a statement from the Adamawa State Police Command, officers were dispatched to the scene following a distress call from community members. Upon arrival, operatives discovered the lifeless body of the clergyman with gunshot wounds. Three empty AK-47 shells were recovered from the scene and have been taken for forensic analysis.

The Police Public Relations Officer, who confirmed the incident, said a full-scale investigation has been launched to determine the motive behind the killing and to identify and apprehend those responsible. "We are pursuing several leads. The Commissioner of Police has deployed additional tactical teams to the area to ensure the perpetrators are brought to justice," the statement read.

No arrests have been announced as of the time of this report.

Community sources who spoke to Prime Brief Media on condition of anonymity expressed shock and fear over the killing. "Pastor Ezeoikwe was a man of peace. He had no known enemies. We do not understand why anyone would target him," one community elder stated.

Adamawa State, while not as severely affected by insurgency as neighbouring Borno and Yobe states, has experienced periodic attacks by armed groups operating across the porous borders of the Northeast region. Song Local Government Area, in particular, has been vulnerable to incursions by criminal elements who exploit the difficult terrain and limited security presence in rural communities.

The killing of a clergyman raises concerns about the potential targeting of religious leaders, a tactic that criminal and extremist groups have employed elsewhere in the region to destabilise communities and provoke wider conflict. Security analysts have repeatedly warned that attacks on religious figures carry the risk of spiralling into broader communal tension if not promptly and effectively addressed.
