The Benue State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of two individuals in connection with the mob killing of a National Youth Service Corps member, Benjamin Msughaondo, who was beaten to death after being falsely accused of stealing a motorcycle. The tragic incident occurred late Sunday night, April 19, 2026, around the Major settlement area near the Buruku Local Government Secretariat.
Confirming the arrests on Thursday, April 24, in Makurdi, Benue State Police Command spokesperson DSP Edet Udeme told Prime Brief Media that preliminary investigations had established that the accusation levelled against the deceased was entirely false. Documents recovered from the scene and verified by investigators confirmed that Msughaondo was the legitimate owner of the motorcycle in question.
"He was wrongly accused of stealing a motorcycle, and without verifying the claim, he was mobbed to death," Udeme stated. "The documents proving his ownership were with him at the time. This was a senseless and completely avoidable loss of a young life."
According to accounts gathered by Prime Brief Media from local sources, the corps member was accosted by a group of individuals who accused him of being in possession of a stolen motorcycle. Despite his attempts to explain and provide proof of ownership, the mob descended on him, beating him savagely until he succumbed to his injuries. No attempt was made to contact law enforcement or verify the claims before the fatal assault.
The police spokesperson confirmed that while two suspects have been taken into custody, a third individual believed to have played a key role in instigating the mob action remains on the run. "Efforts are ongoing to track down the fleeing suspect and any other persons who may have participated in this heinous act," Udeme said. "We assure the public that everyone found culpable will face the full weight of the law."
The killing of Benjamin Msughaondo has reignited public discourse on the pervasive menace of jungle justice in Nigeria, where mobs frequently dispense lethal violence based on unverified accusations, often with impunity. Human rights advocates have long called for stricter enforcement of laws against extrajudicial killings and for community sensitisation campaigns to discourage vigilantism.
The National Youth Service Corps is yet to issue an official statement on the incident. However, corps members serving in Benue State have expressed shock and grief over the death of their colleague, with many calling on the state government and security agencies to ensure that justice is served.
Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia has previously condemned incidents of mob violence in the state and urged citizens to report suspected criminal activity to law enforcement agencies rather than resorting to self-help. It remains unclear whether the governor will make a specific statement on Msughaondo's killing.
