Troops have intercepted a significant cache of anti-aircraft ammunition and suspected explosives along the Manchok–Jos highway in Kaduna State, arresting seven individuals in the process. The discovery, made during a routine checkpoint operation, has raised fresh concerns about the movement of high-grade weapons across northern Nigeria.
The Manchok–Jos road, linking Kaduna and Plateau states, has remained a strategic corridor amid ongoing security challenges in parts of the region. Authorities have intensified surveillance in recent months to curb arms trafficking and criminal activity.
The operation occurred around 11:45 a.m. on April 16, 2026, near Boys Science Secondary School, Manchok. Troops stopped a navy blue Opel wagon carrying seven passengers.
A search of the vehicle led to the recovery of 569 anti-aircraft rounds, a warhead, empty AK-47 shells, and components suspected to be used for explosive devices. Some condemned mobile phones were also found.
The driver, identified as Khalifa Bawa, reportedly told security operatives the items were part of a waybill delivery but failed to provide verifiable details about the sender.
All seven occupants have been taken into custody and are undergoing investigation. Security officials say they will be handed over to relevant authorities for further interrogation and possible prosecution.
The interception underscores ongoing efforts by security forces to disrupt illegal arms movement. However, it also raises pressing questions about the sources and intended destination of such dangerous weapons within the region.
