MAKURDI, Nigeria – United Nations Deputy
Secretary-General Amina Mohammed called for strengthened peacebuilding,
inclusive development, and deeper global-subnational partnerships during an
official visit to Benue State on April 10, 2026.
Speaking at the Government House in Makurdi,
Mohammed described Benue as “a state of enormous importance to Nigeria’s food
security, economic vitality and social stability” and commended the resilience
of its people despite mounting challenges.
She extended condolences to families affected
by recent violent attacks in Mbalom (Gwer East LGA) and Yelewata (Guma LGA),
stating: “Let me begin by extending my heartfelt condolences to the families of
those killed and express my solidarity with all affected communities, including
those newly displaced.”
Mohammed noted that Benue’s challenges conflict,
climate shocks, and economic strain reflect broader global pressures that are
“converging to test the resilience of vulnerable communities.” She praised the
state government’s 2026 budget focused on rural development and its adoption of
Nigeria’s first fully digital e-Parliament system.
She urged sustained investment in agriculture
and livelihoods, emphasizing that Benue’s status as Nigeria’s “food basket” holds
potential for generating “livelihoods, enterprise and broader prosperity.”
No immediate policy commitments or funding announcements accompanied the visit.
