World Athletics has officially approved Nigeria's participation in all six relay events at the 2026 World Athletics Relays, clearing the path for the country's sprinters and quarter-milers to compete for global honours and qualification spots in Gaborone, Botswana.
The confirmation was contained in the official entry list published by the global athletics governing body on Tuesday, April 22, 2026. Nigeria is among a select group of nations granted entries across the full complement of relay disciplines: men's 4x100 metres, women's 4x100 metres, men's 4x400 metres, women's 4x400 metres, and the mixed 4x400 metres relay.
The World Relays, scheduled to take place from May 1 to May 3, 2026, at the Botswana National Stadium in Gaborone, represents a critical milestone in the international athletics calendar. The championship serves as the primary qualification pathway for the relay events at the 2027 World Athletics Championships, placing significant competitive stakes on Nigerian performances.
Nigeria has a storied history in relay events on the global stage. The men's 4x400m relay team won bronze at the 2004 Athens Olympics, while the women's 4x100m quartet claimed gold at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham. The mixed 4x400m relay, a relatively new addition to major championships, presents an opportunity for Nigeria to leverage its depth across both genders.
The Athletics Federation of Nigeria is expected to announce its final team roster in the coming days. Sources within the federation who spoke to Prime Brief Media indicated that selection will prioritise athletes who have demonstrated consistent form in the early part of the 2026 season and those with proven relay experience.
"Full participation across all six relays is a statement of intent. It shows we are not merely attending; we are competing," a federation official stated on condition of anonymity. "The technical team has been working on baton exchanges and team chemistry. Gaborone is an important step towards the World Championships."
The 2026 World Relays will feature approximately 1,200 athletes from over 70 countries. Beyond World Championships qualification, the event offers prize money and world ranking points that contribute to athletes' standing ahead of major competitions.
