Senate orders crackdown on bandits flaunting crime cash on TikTok

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has reacted to the defection of its erstwhile member and former presidential candidate Peter Obi, stating that the move did not come as a surprise given what it described as his history of political movement. In a statement issued on Monday evening, the National Publicity Secretary of the ADC said, “Peter Obi is a serial defector; people should not be shocked. He left APGA, left Labour Party, and now he has left us again. The ADC remains focused on building a strong, democratic institution.”

The statement came just hours after Obi, alongside former Kano State Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso, formally joined the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) at a well-attended Abuja press conference. The ADC’s reaction sought to downplay the impact of the defections, insisting that the party’s identity was not tied to any individual personality. “Our strength is in our principles and our grassroots network, not in transient political figures,” the party’s spokesman added.

However, the ADC’s composure belies the scale of the exodus it is facing. In addition to Obi and Kwankwaso, 17 House of Representatives members defected from the ADC to the NDC earlier on Tuesday, alongside Senator Victor Umeh. The mass departure leaves the ADC with a significantly reduced caucus in the National Assembly and raises questions about its viability as a third-force platform ahead of the 2027 elections.

Analysts have noted that the ADC’s spirited response may be aimed at reassuring its remaining members and projecting strength, even as the NDC consolidates as the main opposition hub. The ADC has promised to hold an emergency national convention in the coming weeks to elect new leaders and chart a path forward.
