The curtain fell on the 2026 African Senior Athletics Championships in Accra on Saturday, 17 May, with Nigeria's Tobi Amusan reaffirming her continental dominance by clinching a third straight gold medal in the women's 100m hurdles.

Amusan, the world record holder, crossed the line in 12.83 seconds, well ahead of her closest challengers, to extend her reign as Africa's undisputed sprint hurdles queen. Her performance headlined a successful outing for a 41-member Nigerian squad that exceeded pre-championship expectations despite the last-minute withdrawal of shot put champion Chukwuebuka Enekwechi.

Nigeria's medal haul included gold in the mixed 4x400m relay, silver medals from Rosemary Chukwuma in the women's 100m and Sade Olatoye in the women's hammer throw, and bronze medals from Chidera Ezeakor in the men's 100m, Divine Oladipo and Obiageri Amaechi in women's discus, among others.

Athletics Federation of Nigeria President Tonobok Okowa praised the team's showing. "Our athletes have done the nation proud. This performance is a testament to our preparations and the depth of talent in Nigeria. We will build on this for the World Championships in Beijing," Okowa said.

The championships, held at the University of Ghana Sports Complex, featured over 1,000 athletes from across the continent and served as a qualifier for the 2027 World Athletics Championships in Beijing.
