A deepening rift within the Progressive Governors Forum, the influential platform of governors elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress, has burst into the open with the emergence of two rival leadership factions, threatening to reshape internal party dynamics ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Imo State Governor Hope Uzodinma insists he remains the legitimate Chairman of the PGF, with Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani as his deputy. Uzodinma's camp argues that his tenure was extended by consensus and that any move to unseat him violates the Forum's established protocols.

However, a rival faction has coalesced around Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun, who is positioning himself as the new Chairman, with Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq as his deputy. Sources within the Forum told Prime Brief Media that the Abiodun faction commands the support of a majority of APC governors, particularly from the South-West and North-Central zones.

The split is rooted in broader jostling for influence over the party's direction and the 2027 presidential ticket. Uzodinma is seen as a close ally of President Bola Tinubu, while Abiodun's camp is believed to represent governors who want a more collective leadership structure that limits the dominance of any single figure.

Adding to the intrigue, there are unconfirmed reports that Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah, a member of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party, may have emerged as the Chairman of a separate but related body the broader Nigeria Governors Forum though this could not be independently verified at press time. If confirmed, it would be a remarkable development in cross-party governance.

The APC National Working Committee has not issued a statement on the PGF split, but party sources say the National Chairman is being lobbied to mediate.
