Senate orders crackdown on bandits flaunting crime cash on TikTok

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has continued to strengthen its dominance in the National Assembly, receiving more than 150 defectors from opposition parties since the beginning of 2024, according to party officials who spoke with Prime Brief Media on condition of anonymity because they were not authorised to release internal figures. The latest wave of defections, confirmed on 28 May, 2026, includes two senators and twelve members of the House of Representatives, mostly from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Labour Party (LP).

Senator representing Kebbi South, Yahaya Abdullahi (name as carried by Daily Trust on 29 May), was among the defectors. In a statement, he cited “the APC’s superior governance record and internal reconciliation mechanisms” as reasons for his switch. The APC now controls 72 out of 109 Senate seats and 280 out of 360 House seats, according to a tally by The Cable.

In a related development, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has clinched the presidential ticket of the African Democratic Congress (ADC). Atiku’s campaign team announced the victory on 29 May, 2026, stating that he won by a wide margin (1,247 delegate votes to 312 for his closest rival, Alhaji Sani Musa) in a primary election held in Abuja and monitored by officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Speaking after the declaration, Atiku said, “The ADC offers a fresh platform for Nigerians who are tired of the APC’s mismanagement. We will build a coalition of the willing to rescue our country.” Political analysts note that Atiku’s move to the ADC, his third party affiliation since 2015 could fragment opposition votes unless a merger agreement is reached with the PDP and other smaller parties.

Meanwhile, the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) proceeded with its nationwide primaries on 29 May despite Eid‑el‑Kabri‑related transport disruptions. The NDC’s national organising secretary, in a statement to Punch, dismissed early results circulating on social media as “fake and misleading,” urging members to wait for official INEC-collated figures.
