Professor Stephen Adi Odey, the Cross River State Commissioner for Education, formally solemnised his marriage to his partner, Dr. Mercy Ekpe, in a well-attended wedding ceremony in Calabar on Saturday. The event, which combined traditional marriage rites and a church blessing, drew prominent figures from the state's political, academic, and traditional institutions, confirming the commissioner's standing in society.
According to information made available to Prime Brief Media, the traditional ceremony was held at the bride's family compound in the Akpabuyo Local Government Area, in line with Efik customs, while the church service took place at Hope Waddell Presbyterian Church, an historic landmark in Calabar. Guests included the state governor, Senator Bassey Otu, who served as chairman of the occasion, members of the Cross River State Executive Council, the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Calabar, and heads of educational agencies.
Professor Odey, a respected academic and administrator, has served as Commissioner for Education since 2023, overseeing reforms in basic and secondary education and championing the state's digital literacy programmes. The bride, Dr. Mercy Ekpe, is a medical doctor and public health practitioner attached to the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital. The couple is reported to have met during a collaborative health-education outreach in rural communities two years ago.
The wedding reception, held at the Metropolitan Hotel, featured tributes lauding the couple's commitment to community service. The Commissioner for Information, who spoke to journalists on the sidelines, said: “We are all here to celebrate a man who gives his best to the state. This is a joyous moment, and we wish the couple a lifetime of happiness.” The governor, in a brief remark, described Professor Odey as a dedicated public servant and prayed for a blessed union.
The wedding has been a subject of widespread goodwill messages on social media, with the hashtag #OdeyTakesAWife trending locally. Colleagues and students from the University of Calabar, where the commissioner previously lectured, joined in the virtual celebration.
