DID FEMI OTEDOLA FUND THE DANGOTE PETROLEUM REFINERY?

A viral post circulating extensively on X and Facebook in early May 2026 claimed that billionaire businessman Femi Otedola had secretly financed the construction of the multi-billion-dollar Dangote Petroleum Refinery. The post, which was purportedly sourced from a statement by Aliko Dangote himself, alleged that Dangote had fallen out with fellow magnate Tony Elumelu after a failed request for financial assistance and that Otedola had stepped in to provide the necessary capital. Another version of the claim suggested that the refinery was financed through personal borrowing from Dangote's wealthy friends, including Otedola, Elumelu, and Mike Adenuga. The posts generated massive engagement across social media platforms, with many users sharing the narrative as a revelation about Nigeria's corporate elite.

This investigation cross-referenced these claims against verified statements from the parties involved, official corporate disclosures, and reports from credible media outlets. The evidence overwhelmingly contradicts the viral narrative.

First, the Dangote Group itself issued a formal statement through its Group Chief Branding and Communications Officer, Anthony Chiejina, dismissing the claims as "false, malicious, and baseless." The statement, shared with Premium Times, categorically rejected the assertion that the refinery was financed through personal borrowing from friends, describing it as "wholly inaccurate and a deliberate misrepresentation of facts." The company clarified that Aliko Dangote does not fund his projects through personal borrowing from friends and does not engage in such lending arrangements, noting that the Dangote Group is a well-structured organisation with established channels for raising corporate capital.

Second, Femi Otedola personally addressed the claim in a post on his official X account titled "Let's Set the Record Straight." He stated unequivocally: "Reports claiming that Femi Otedola funded the Dangote Petroleum Refinery are completely and utterly false. He has not invested a single kobo, not one dollar, not one naira. " Otedola clarified that his only connection to the refinery project was a request for a special allocation to participate in the refinery's forthcoming public offering, a standard investment interest, not a financing arrangement. He further added: "I can categorically state that at no point did Alhaji Dangote request financing from Mr. Elumelu, Mr. Adenuga, or myself."

Third, the Dangote Group also denied any rift between Aliko Dangote and Tony Elumelu, stating that both businessmen maintain a "longstanding and cordial relationship." The company raised concerns over what it described as a "growing trend of fabricated statements and the unauthorized use of Mr. Dangote's name, likeness, and image in AI-generated advertisements and other misleading content" and warned that it would pursue legal action where necessary.

No credible evidence has been presented by those circulating the claim to substantiate it. No financial records, investor filings, or reputable news investigations support the narrative of Otedola's secret funding. The claim appears to be part of a broader pattern of fabricated content targeting Nigeria's corporate leaders, possibly generated or amplified by AI tools.

Verdict: FALSE. The Dangote Petroleum Refinery was financed through structured corporate financing, not through personal loans from Femi Otedola or other billionaire friends of Aliko Dangote. Both the Dangote Group and Femi Otedola have explicitly and emphatically denied the claims, and no verifiable evidence supports the viral narrative. The story is a fabrication, and its circulation underscores the growing challenge of AI-generated misinformation targeting high-profile individuals.
