Nigeria has deployed a contingent of troops to the Republic of Benin as part of a regional stabilisation mission designed to support the democratic process and ensure peaceful elections in the neighbouring West African country.

The Defence Headquarters confirmed the deployment in a statement on Monday, stating that the troops are operating under the mandate of the Economic Community of West African States. "Nigeria, as a leading member of ECOWAS, remains committed to the defence of democratic governance and regional stability. Our troops will work alongside other contributing nations to provide a secure environment for the electoral process," the statement read.

The deployment comes amid political tensions in Benin Republic ahead of scheduled elections. ECOWAS has been actively engaged in preventive diplomacy and has deployed observer missions to several countries in the region to forestall the kind of unconstitutional changes of government that have affected other West African states in recent years.

Analysts say Nigeria's deployment reflects its traditional role as the guarantor of regional stability and its commitment to the ECOWAS protocol on democracy and good governance. The troops are expected to remain in Benin for the duration of the electoral period.
