The Federal Government has signed a strategic partnership agreement with Airbus, the European multinational aerospace corporation, aimed at accelerating the development of Nigeria's aviation and aerospace sector.

The agreement was signed on Monday by the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, and the Vice President for Africa and Middle East at Airbus, Mikail Houari, on the sidelines of a global aviation forum in Rabat, Morocco.

A statement from the Ministry of Aviation said the partnership covers a wide range of areas, including the transfer of cutting-edge aerospace technology, training and certification of Nigerian engineers and maintenance technicians, and the establishment of an aerospace research and innovation hub at a Nigerian university. The hub will focus on unmanned aerial vehicle development, lightweight materials, and sustainable aviation fuels.

Keyamo described the agreement as “a major leap forward in this administration's commitment to diversifying the economy and creating high-value employment opportunities for young Nigerians.” He said the aerospace sector offers a pathway to transition from a consumer of aviation services to a participant in the global aerospace value chain.

“For decades, Nigeria has been a market for aircraft. With this partnership, we are taking the first concrete steps towards becoming a player in the industry. The innovation hub will be a magnet for talent and investment,” Keyamo stated.

Houari expressed Airbus's confidence in the Nigerian market and said the company was impressed by the government's reform agenda in the aviation sector. “Nigeria has one of the most promising aviation markets in Africa. Our partnership goes beyond aircraft sales; it is about building a sustainable ecosystem that will serve the region,” he said.

The specific location for the innovation hub has not been announced, but sources indicate that the Nigerian College of Aviation Technology in Zaria is a strong candidate. The partnership also opens the door for future collaboration on Nigeria's national carrier project and satellite-based navigation systems.
