Senate orders crackdown on bandits flaunting crime cash on TikTok

The Northern Youth Assembly has formally rejected a recent Amnesty International report documenting alleged extrajudicial killings by security operatives in Kano State, accusing the global human rights watchdog of bias, selective outrage, and reliance on unverified claims.

In a statement signed by its National President, Alhaji Kabiru Yusuf, and issued on Thursday in Kano, the NYA described the report as "a distortion of facts and a continuation of a long-standing pattern of prejudicial reporting against Northern Nigeria and its institutions."

"Amnesty International must apply consistent standards in its work on Nigeria. We have documented numerous instances where the organisation has ignored or downplayed atrocities in other parts of the country while rushing to condemn security operations in the North. This selective outrage undermines the credibility of its findings," Yusuf said.

The NYA called on Amnesty to verify its sources thoroughly before publication, arguing that the organisation had relied heavily on accounts from individuals with "questionable credibility and political motivations." The group further urged the Federal Government to demand an independent review of the methodology used in compiling the report.

The Amnesty International report, published last week, detailed several incidents of alleged extrajudicial killings and human rights violations by security forces in Kano State between 2024 and early 2026. Amnesty's Nigeria office had not responded to the NYA's statement at press time.

Kano State has been a focal point of security operations in recent months, and human rights groups have periodically raised concerns about the conduct of security personnel. Security agencies have consistently denied allegations of extrajudicial conduct, insisting that all operations are conducted within the bounds of the law.
