TINUBU HAILS TEAM NIGERIA’S RECORD 15TH AFRICAN WRESTLING TITLE

President Bola Tinubu has congratulated Nigeria’s female wrestlers following their historic performance at the just-concluded 2026 African Senior Wrestling Championships in Alexandria, Egypt, where they secured a record-extending 15th African Women’s title.
In a statement issued on Sunday by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu praised the team for dominating the competition, which saw Nigeria claim eight gold and two silver medals from ten weight classes. The President said the athletes had demonstrated “superb grit, discipline, and the irrepressible Nigerian spirit on the continental stage.”
“Winning an eighth straight team title speaks to a system of excellence. These young women are not just champions; they are ambassadors who have flown the green and white flag with honour and pride. Their victory is a bright light that reflects the immense potential of our youth when given the right environment to excel,” President Tinubu said.
He singled out veteran champion Esther Kolawole for securing her fifth African title and praised other gold medallists, including Christianah Ogunsanya, Jumoke Adekoye, and Hannah Ojo. The President assured that his administration would continue to invest in sports development and create pathways for young athletes to achieve excellence on the global stage.
The Nigeria Wrestling Federation dedicated the victory to the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, for her inspiration to Nigerian women. The Federation’s president, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, noted that the team’s bond and preparation paid off, promising to maintain the country’s dominance at the World Championships later this year.
