World 100m hurdles record holder and defending African champion Tobi Amusan will lead a strong 45-athlete Nigerian contingent to the 25th Confederation of African Athletics (CAA) Senior Championships, billed to hold at the University of Ghana Stadium in Accra from 12 to 17 May 2026. The Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) released the final team list on Thursday, expressing confidence in a dominant performance that will reaffirm Nigeria's status as a continental athletics powerhouse.
Amusan, who won gold at the last edition in Douala, Cameroon, will be the star attraction in the women's sprints and hurdles. She is joined by a formidable lineup that includes Commonwealth Games medallist Favour Ashe in the men's 100m, Rosemary Chukwuma in the women's sprints, and Ezekiel Nathaniel, the national record holder in the men's 400m hurdles. The team also features rising stars such as Samuel Ogazi (400m) and Prestina Ochonogor (long jump), signalling a youth-driven evolution in Nigerian athletics.
AFN President, Tonobok Okowa, said the federation has invested heavily in preparation camps and overseas training tours to ensure the athletes are competition-ready. "We are not going to Accra merely to participate. We are going to compete and to win. This team reflects the best of Nigeria's athletic talent, and we expect them to deliver medals across multiple events," Okowa stated.
The CAA Championships serve as a critical benchmark ahead of the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow and the 2027 World Athletics Championships in Beijing. Nigeria has historically performed well at the African Championships, finishing among the top nations in previous editions. The team will compete in events across sprints, hurdles, middle-distance races, jumps, and throws.
The contingent departed Lagos on Friday morning aboard a chartered flight to Accra. Athletics enthusiasts across the country have expressed high hopes, with many singling out the women's 4x100m relay team, the men's 400m hurdlers, and Amusan as near-certain medal prospects.
