Senate orders crackdown on bandits flaunting crime cash on TikTok

Two staff members of the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC) who were abducted on 29 April 2026 while on official duty have now spent seven days in captivity with no word from their captors, the power utility disclosed on Monday. The company stated it is collaborating with security agencies and providing support to the families of the missing workers, whose identities have been withheld for safety reasons.

According to an IBEDC statement released on 5 May, the employees were seized while carrying out routine operations in a part of Ogun State. The company did not specify the exact location, citing ongoing security efforts, but called on the public to volunteer any useful information that could lead to their safe rescue. “We remain hopeful and are doing everything possible in partnership with the relevant authorities,” the statement read in part.

The Ogun State Police Command, however, has presented a contradictory account. Police spokesperson Omolola Odutola told journalists that the command had no record of such an abduction within its jurisdiction and urged reporters to “cross-check with police commands in neighbouring states.” The denial raises questions about the precise location of the incident and whether it occurred along a disputed boundary area.

Kidnappings of utility workers have been on the rise as electricity infrastructure expands into rural and semi-urban areas with uneven security coverage. Security analyst Dr. Aliyu Mukhtar noted that utility field workers are increasingly seen as soft targets by criminal gangs seeking ransom payments. “Without dedicated escort protocols and enhanced intelligence, these attacks will persist,” he said.
