Atiku picks Amaechi as running mate, forms 'AA' ticket for 2027

Abuja, Nigeria | By Prime Brief Media

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has chosen former Transportation Minister Chibuike Amaechi as his vice-presidential nominee on the African Democratic Congress (ADC) platform, forming a potential 'AA' ticket for the January 2027 presidential election, multiple sources confirmed on Thursday.

The choice of Amaechi comes as a bold counter to the 'OK' ticket pairing of Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso on the rival NDC for the upcoming presidential election. After weeks of rigorous negotiations within the coalition platform, which was threatened by post-primary recriminations, Atiku finally secured Amaechi after assuring him that the VP nominee would have extensive roles to play in both the campaign and government.

Meanwhile, Atiku used the Democracy Day anniversary to accuse the APC administration of "a systematic assault on the democratic space." In a statement personally signed, he said: "We cannot celebrate the defeat of military dictatorship while tolerating the rise of civilian autocracy. We cannot honour the heroes of democracy while remaining silent as democratic institutions are weakened and captured."

He called on Nigerians to "stand up against bad governance, reject the politics of intimidation, and resist every manifestation of democratic backsliding," urging citizens to ensure that the sacrifices of the June 12 struggle were not in vain.
