A joint security team in Anambra State has neutralised four suspected armed gang members and recovered a cache of weapons, ammunition, and explosive devices following a confrontation in Orumba South Local Government Area.
The operation took place along the Ogboji–Ajalli Road after security agencies reportedly received intelligence on the movement of heavily armed suspects within the area.
Authorities say investigations are continuing while efforts have intensified to apprehend other members of the group who escaped during the exchange of gunfire.
How the Operation Unfolded
According to the Anambra State Police Command, operatives attached to a joint security patrol encountered the armed suspects during a routine operation in the Aguata security sector.
A gun battle reportedly ensued, resulting in the deaths of four suspected gang members.
Police spokesperson SP Tochukwu Ikenga said the operation was part of ongoing efforts to dismantle criminal networks operating across parts of the state.
Weapons and Explosives Recovered
Security personnel recovered a significant quantity of weapons and operational equipment believed to have been used by the group.
Recovered items include:
- One General Purpose Machine Gun (GPMG)
- Two AK-47 rifles
- Multiple rifle magazines
- Assorted live ammunition
- Four undetonated Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs)
- Police camouflage uniforms and accessories
Authorities described the recovery as one of the most significant security seizures recorded in recent operations within the area.
Additional Items Found
Investigators also recovered:
- A white Toyota Sienna bus
- Several mobile phones
- A laptop computer
- A Point-of-Sale (POS) machine
- ATM cards and identification documents
- Assorted charms and personal effects
The recovered materials are expected to assist investigators in tracking the group's activities and identifying possible accomplices.
Manhunt Underway
Security agencies confirmed that several suspects fled the scene during the operation.
Officials believe some of the escapees may have sustained injuries and have launched coordinated intelligence and surveillance efforts to locate them.
Residents have been urged to report suspicious movements or individuals seeking medical treatment for gunshot wounds.
Security Situation in Anambra
Anambra State has witnessed a series of security operations in recent years targeting armed gangs, kidnappers, and criminal groups responsible for attacks on communities and public infrastructure.
Authorities say intelligence-led operations remain central to ongoing efforts to improve security across the state.
Why This Matters
The recovery of military-grade weapons and explosive devices underscores the level of firepower available to criminal groups operating in parts of Nigeria.
