Plateau State Governor, Barr. Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, has reaffirmed his administration's commitment to achieving lasting peace, strengthening unity, and driving sustainable development following the submission of a strategic report by a committee chaired by former Governor Senator Joshua Dariye.
The report was presented at the Old Government House, Rayfield, Jos, by the committee established after Plateau State's high-level engagement with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Governor Mutfwang described the report as a strategic roadmap that would guide government decisions and future engagement with the Federal Government in addressing the state's security and socio-political challenges.
Committee Established After Presidential Engagement
The committee was constituted to harmonise issues raised during the Plateau delegation's visit to President Tinubu, develop a comprehensive engagement framework with the Presidency, identify priority areas requiring federal intervention, and recommend practical measures to promote peace, security, social cohesion, and development.
According to Governor Mutfwang, President Tinubu demonstrated genuine concern for Plateau State during the meeting and directed the state government to intensify efforts toward restoring enduring peace.
"When we visited Mr. President, it was evident that he has a genuine concern for Plateau State. That is why he gave us clear marching orders to reignite and reinvigorate the search for lasting peace on the Plateau," the governor said.
Report to Guide Wider Stakeholder Engagement
Governor Mutfwang explained that the committee was established partly to provide clarity following what he described as widespread misrepresentation of the purpose of the state's engagement with the President.
He said the report would serve as the foundation for broader consultations and informed dialogue among stakeholders.
The governor also announced plans to present the report before a larger assembly of Plateau stakeholders to ensure broader participation in the peace-building process.
According to him, those who accompanied the state delegation to the Presidential Villa did not represent every segment of Plateau society, making wider consultations necessary.
He commended traditional rulers, religious leaders, political leaders, and community stakeholders for sustaining dialogue across ethnic and religious lines, describing their contributions as essential to preserving peace in the state.
Dariye Calls for Comprehensive Peace Strategy
Presenting the report, committee chairman and former Plateau State Governor, Senator Joshua Dariye, said the assignment focused on protecting lives, securing communities, and developing long-term solutions to insecurity.
He disclosed that the committee submitted a two-volume report containing detailed findings, implementation strategies, and policy recommendations.
According to Dariye, the committee found that Plateau's security challenges are historical, multidimensional, and cannot be attributed to a single cause.
He observed that although numerous reports and peace initiatives already exist, implementation has remained the major challenge due to weak institutions, inadequate follow-up, poor accountability, and frequent changes in personnel.
Beyond Military Solutions
The committee recommended a comprehensive peace and recovery framework extending beyond security operations.
Its recommendations include protecting vulnerable communities, supporting internally displaced persons, rebuilding affected communities, restoring livelihoods, providing trauma healing services, empowering young people and women, promoting interfaith dialogue, strengthening traditional conflict resolution mechanisms, and improving access to education.
Dariye also stressed the importance of strategic communication, urging Plateau State to reshape its public image by highlighting progress, correcting misinformation, and promoting the state as a destination for peace, investment, tourism, and economic opportunities.
Commitment to Sustainable Peace
The submission of the report reflects the Plateau State Government's commitment to evidence-based policymaking, inclusive consultations, and institutional reforms aimed at addressing the root causes of insecurity.
The Mutfwang administration says it remains focused on building sustainable peace while positioning Plateau State as a secure destination for investment, economic growth, and national development.
