KADUNA, NIGERIA — Nine persons were reportedly killed and 11 others injured following an attack on Angwan Magaji, an Irigwe community in Kamaru Ward of Kauru Local Government Area, Kaduna State, on the night of June 16, 2026.

The casualty figures were released by the Irigwe Youth Movement (IYM), which alleged that armed Fulani militias carried out the assault. The claims had not been independently verified at the time of reporting, and no official statement from security agencies was immediately available.

In a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Joseph Chudu Yonkpa, on June 17, 2026, the IYM alleged that armed Fulani militias carried out the attack late on June 16. According to the statement, those killed included four children and several adults.

The victims were identified as Jerry Doctor, Danlami Magani, Sunday Chibi, Rita Abdullahi, Sunday Elkan, Esther Kefas, Happy Friday, Moses Daddy, and Daddy Ibrahim. The group also listed 11 individuals who reportedly sustained varying degrees of injuries during the incident.

The attack is the latest in a series of violent incidents that have affected communities in parts of Kaduna State, particularly areas where long-standing tensions over land use, security, and communal relations have persisted.

The Irigwe Youth Movement called on security agencies to investigate the attack, arrest those responsible, and ensure justice for the victims and affected families. "We demand that security agencies immediately investigate this attack, apprehend the perpetrators, and ensure that justice is served. The continuous loss of innocent lives in our communities cannot be tolerated," the statement read.

The attack on Angwan Magaji comes just days after gunmen attacked the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS) in Plateau State, killing three security operatives, and follows a pattern of escalating violence across the North-Central region.

Community members are expected to seek increased security presence and humanitarian support for affected families as investigations continue. The IYM has called on the government to deploy more security personnel to vulnerable communities and to take proactive measures to prevent future attacks.
