The death toll from Sunday night's attack on Kawel community in Bokkos Local Government Area of Plateau State has risen to over 30, according to residents and local sources.

Residents of the community are still counting their losses after gunmen suspected to be bandits invaded the village in Mushere District, killing scores of residents and leaving many others injured.
A resident of the community, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the attackers arrived in the village at about 11 p.m. on Sunday and began shooting sporadically, targeting anyone in sight.
They killed over 30 people. We are still counting. Many families have lost multiple relatives. It is a tragedy, the resident said.
The latest attack has further heightened fears among residents of Bokkos LGA and surrounding communities, which have experienced repeated attacks in recent years. Community leaders have called on the Federal Government and the Plateau State Government to deploy additional security forces to the area to prevent further bloodshed.
The Plateau State Police Command and Operation Enduring Peace are yet to issue official statements on the incident as of the time of filing this report.
