The British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Richard Montgomery, has said the credibility of the 2027 general elections will be crucial to sustaining public confidence in Nigeria's democratic process.

Montgomery spoke in Abuja during the Nigeria Civil Society Situation Room Democracy Day Dialogue, stating: "The credibility of the next elections will be vital for public confidence in the democratic process and for Nigeria's continued progress, and indeed for its leadership across Africa and beyond."

He called for greater participation of women, youths and persons with disabilities in the electoral process and pledged the UK's continued support for strengthening democratic institutions in Nigeria.

Clement Nwankwo of the Situation Room warned: "We do not want January 16 to be a defeat of June 12. The signals we are getting are not good enough." He referred to concerns about INEC's preparedness, the ongoing data breach, and the proliferation of fake news ahead of the polls.

The event was part of activities marking Democracy Day, which commemorates the annulled June 12, 1993 presidential election widely believed to have been won by the late Chief MKO Abiola.

The British High Commissioner's remarks underscore the international community's close watch on Nigeria's electoral process. A credible 2027 election is seen as essential for attracting foreign investment and maintaining Nigeria's leadership position in Africa.
