KAURU, KADUNA STATE — At least 30 people are feared to have been killed after armed attackers reportedly invaded Chawai community in Kauru Local Government Area of Kaduna State, triggering fresh displacement and renewed concerns over the worsening security situation in Southern Kaduna.
The attack reportedly began on Sunday night and lasted for several hours, with residents alleging that the assailants moved from house to house and attacked people inside their homes.
However, the reported casualty figure had not been independently verified as of the time of filing this report, while the Kaduna State Police Command had yet to issue an official statement on the incident.
The latest violence has drawn condemnation from former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and the Southern Kaduna Peoples’ Union (SOKAPU), both of whom called for urgent and stronger security intervention to prevent further attacks.
Residents Say Attackers Moved From House to House
A resident of Kauru, Mark Vincent, told the BBC Hausa Service that the attackers entered Chawai at about nightfall and allegedly carried out coordinated attacks on residents.
According to the account, 28 bodies were deposited in a mortuary, while two other victims had reportedly been buried.
Seven people were also said to have sustained gunshot injuries and were receiving medical treatment.
Vincent rejected suggestions that the incident was a clash between farmers and herders, maintaining that residents were attacked inside their homes.
He alleged that about 50 armed men carried out the attack and operated in the community for nearly three hours before leaving.

Atiku said recurring attacks on communities demonstrate the urgent need for stronger and more effective security measures across Nigeria.
He argued that government performance should be measured by the ability of authorities to protect citizens and prevent repeated attacks, rather than by public relations or official assurances.
The former Vice President called for a comprehensive review of Nigeria’s security architecture and urged authorities to prioritise intelligence-driven operations, proactive security measures and the swift prosecution of those responsible for violent crimes.
He also extended condolences to families affected by the attack and called for improved protection of vulnerable communities.
SOKAPU Calls for Reinforcement of Security Operations
The Southern Kaduna Peoples’ Union also called on the Kaduna State Police Command and other security agencies to strengthen operations across vulnerable communities.
In an open letter addressed to the Kaduna State Commissioner of Police, SOKAPU President, Engr. Tabara Samuel Kato, said insecurity had continued to affect communities across Kauru, Kajuru, Chikun and Zangon Kataf local government areas.
The group warned that recurring attacks, kidnappings and threats to farmlands were increasing fear among residents and forcing families from their ancestral communities.
SOKAPU called for:
- Intelligence-driven security operations;
- Increased deployment of Mobile Police personnel;
- Additional counter-terrorism units in vulnerable areas;
- Improved surveillance of forest corridors;
- Identification and dismantling of criminal hideouts; and
- Stronger protection for rural communities and farming areas.
The group said the protection of lives and property remains a fundamental responsibility of government and urged authorities to take immediate steps to prevent further killings and displacement.
A Region Facing Repeated Security Threats
Kauru Local Government Area has experienced repeated attacks, kidnappings and displacement over the years.
Earlier security operations in the area reportedly targeted criminal camps and forest hideouts believed to have been used by armed groups.
Community leaders had called for sustained military presence and expanded intelligence operations, warning that temporary interventions may not be sufficient to address long-standing insecurity.
In June 2026, military authorities reported that troops conducting operations across Southern Kaduna had rescued kidnapped victims and destroyed several suspected criminal hideouts.
