MAKURDI, BENUE STATE — Amnesty International Nigeria has called for an immediate, transparent and impartial investigation into the attack on Efeyi community in Ugboju District of Otukpo Local Government Area, Benue State, which claimed the lives of at least 14 people.
The rights organisation condemned the killings, describing the attack as part of an unrelenting wave of violence that continues to devastate rural communities across the state.
Suspected armed herders reportedly invaded the community in the early hours of Tuesday, opening fire on residents and forcing many to flee. Local authorities confirmed that at least 14 bodies had been recovered, while several others sustained injuries.
In a statement, Amnesty International said the continued bloodshed highlights the urgent need for authorities to strengthen security and ensure that perpetrators are held accountable.
The organisation warned that repeated attacks on farming communities have left residents living in fear and have disrupted economic activities across Benue State.
Benue State Governor, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia, condemned the killings and vowed that those responsible would face justice.
He also commended security personnel for neutralising two suspected attackers during operations in the area.
The governor described the attack as a tragedy and assured affected communities of the government's commitment to restoring peace.
Community leaders and residents expressed frustration over what they described as a delayed security response during the attack.
According to eyewitnesses, the assault lasted for several hours, forcing many villagers to abandon their homes and farmlands.
