An FCT High Court has sentenced Jonathan Marcus to death by hanging for the 2024 murder of 80-year-old Adebola Ezekiel and his wife, Abiodun, at their home in Apo Legislative Quarters, Abuja.
ABUJA, FCT – July 1, 2026
An FCT High Court has sentenced Jonathan Marcus to death by hanging for the murder of an elderly couple, Mr. Adebola Ezekiel, 80, and his wife, Mrs. Abiodun Ezekiel, at their residence in Apo Legislative Quarters, Abuja.
The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command announced the conviction on Wednesday, describing it as the outcome of an extensive investigation into the killings, which occurred on April 1, 2024.
According to the FCT Police Command, Jonathan Marcus, a former driver to the deceased couple, fled Abuja after the incident and went into hiding in Obajana, Kogi State.
Police investigators tracked him down, arrested him, and returned him to Abuja for further investigation.
During interrogation, the suspect confessed to entering the couple's residence at about 11:00 p.m. on the night of the attack, where he killed both victims.
Investigators also established that Marcus had previously worked for the couple but was dismissed following repeated disagreements with his employers.
The suspect was arraigned before the FCT High Court, where prosecutors presented evidence linking him to the crime.
Delivering judgment, Hon. Justice M. S. Idris held that the prosecution had proved its case beyond reasonable doubt and consequently convicted Jonathan Marcus of the double murder.
The court sentenced him to death by hanging.
Reacting to the judgment, the FCT Police Command said the conviction reflects its commitment to ensuring that criminal offences are thoroughly investigated and offenders brought to justice.
The Command also reassured residents of the Federal Capital Territory of its resolve to protect lives and property while strengthening public safety across the territory.
The statement was signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, on July 1, 2026.
