Security operatives at the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS), Kuru, in Jos South Local Government Area of Plateau State, on Wednesday night repelled another attack by suspected gunmen, killing one of the assailants during an exchange of gunfire.
The attempted attack occurred at about 11:00 p.m. on Wednesday, July 1, when the armed men reportedly tried to breach the institute's security perimeter. However, security personnel responded swiftly, forcing the attackers to retreat after a fierce gun battle.
The development comes less than two weeks after another deadly attack around the institute and its surrounding community claimed the lives of three people, including security personnel, raising fresh concerns over security around one of Nigeria's foremost policy and leadership training institutions.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the Head of Public Affairs of NIPSS, Dr. Osime Samuel, confirmed that security personnel successfully repelled the attack without any breach of the institute's facilities.
According to the statement, one of the attackers was neutralised during the exchange of gunfire, while others reportedly escaped with varying degrees of injuries.
The National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies, Kuru, wishes to inform the public that another attempt by unidentified armed assailants to breach the Institute's security perimeter was successfully repelled by security personnel late yesterday night, the statement said.
The institute added that all participants, staff, residents and facilities remained safe following the incident.
Following the attack, security agencies have intensified efforts to track down the fleeing suspects while strengthening surveillance and other proactive security measures within and around the institute.
NIPSS assured participants, their families and members of the public that safeguarding lives and property remains its highest priority.
The institute also urged residents to disregard unverified information capable of causing unnecessary panic, maintaining that the situation had been brought under control.
The latest attack has renewed concerns about persistent security threats around Kuru and neighbouring communities despite heightened security presence.
On a previous occasion, suspected gunmen attacked the institute's vicinity, leaving three people, including security personnel, dead. That incident prompted security agencies to reinforce surveillance and increase patrols around the strategic national institution.
Security analysts say repeated attacks targeting areas around NIPSS underscore the need for sustained intelligence gathering and stronger inter-agency collaboration to protect critical national assets.
As of the time of filing this report, the Plateau State Police Command had not issued an official statement regarding the latest incident.
