The Inspector-General of Police has approved the appointment of DSP Orchia Peter Aondongu as the new Police Public Relations Officer of the Benue State Police Command.
MAKURDI, BENUE STATE — The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has approved the appointment of DSP Orchia Peter Aondongu as the new Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the Benue State Police Command.
The appointment was announced in a statement issued on Thursday by the outgoing spokesperson of the command, DSP Udeme Edet.
According to the statement, Aondongu replaces the outgoing spokesperson and will now oversee the command's public communication, media relations and information dissemination activities.
DSP Orchia Aondongu was commissioned into the Nigeria Police Force as an Assistant Superintendent of Police on December 19, 2019, after completing a five-year cadet programme at the Nigerian Police Academy, Wudil, Kano State.
He graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting.
Since joining the force, he has served in several operational and administrative positions, including:
One-Year Attachment at 'B' Division, Lafia;
Divisional Crime Officer, 'C' Division, Lafia;
Second-in-Command, Commissioner of Police Crack Squad, Lafia;
Patrol and Guard Officer, Kadarko Division;
Divisional Crime Officer, Obi Division;
Deputy Police Public Relations Officer, Benue State Command; and
Divisional Police Officer, 'C' Division, North Bank, Makurdi.
Before his latest appointment, he served as the Divisional Police Officer of the North Bank Division in Makurdi.
The new police spokesperson has attended several professional courses, including the Combat Operations Course of the Mobile Police Force at Ila-Orangun.
He has also participated in media and public relations training programmes organised by development partners and other stakeholders.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Cletus C. N. Nwadiobu, congratulated Aondongu on his appointment and expressed confidence in his ability to strengthen police-media relations in the state.
According to the commissioner, the new spokesperson is expected to coordinate the command's public communications and ensure the timely and professional dissemination of information to the public.
The command also urged residents and media organisations to continue supporting the police in promoting transparency, accountability and effective service delivery.
The Police Public Relations Officer serves as the major link between the police and the public, providing updates on security operations, investigations and other activities of the command.
Observers say effective communication is critical in building public trust, especially at a time when Benue State continues to grapple with security challenges.
DSP Orchia Aondongu is expected to assume his new responsibilities immediately and begin coordinating media engagements on behalf of the Benue State Police Command.
