Mining communities across Plateau State are raising fresh concerns over insecurity following a series of deadly attacks on mining sites that have left several miners dead, displaced workers, and heightened fears among residents.

The recurring violence has disrupted mining activities in parts of Jos South Local Government Area, with community leaders warning that the attacks are threatening livelihoods and undermining one of the state's key economic sectors.

Among the recent incidents was an attack in mid-June 2026 at a mining site in Gero Village, Gyel District, where gunmen reportedly killed five miners.

Barely two weeks later, another attack was reported at a mining site in Nyango, also in Gyel District, on June 29, resulting in multiple casualties and renewed panic among miners and surrounding communities.

The attacks are the latest in a string of violent incidents targeting rural communities and mining locations across Plateau State.

Residents and miners say fear has become a constant reality, with many workers now reluctant to visit mining sites due to concerns over possible attacks.

Community members warned that the persistent insecurity is affecting economic activities, reducing productivity, and exposing families who depend on mining for their livelihoods to increasing hardship.

Some miners have reportedly suspended operations until security conditions improve.

Community leaders have appealed to the Federal Government, the Plateau State Government, and security agencies to strengthen surveillance around mining communities and deploy additional personnel to vulnerable areas.

They also called for sustained intelligence-led operations to identify and dismantle criminal groups responsible for the attacks.

Residents argue that improved security is essential not only to protect lives but also to restore confidence in the mining sector, which contributes significantly to local employment and economic development.

Plateau State remains one of Nigeria's leading solid mineral-producing states, with mining activities providing income for thousands of households.

However, repeated attacks have raised concerns that continued insecurity could discourage investment, reduce mineral production, and worsen the socio-economic challenges facing affected communities.

Security experts have repeatedly stressed that protecting mining communities is critical to safeguarding both national economic interests and local livelihoods.
