Troops of Operation SAVANNAH SHIELD have intercepted an armoured vehicle in Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State and arrested its driver for further investigation over suspected irregularities in the documentation presented for the vehicle's movement.
The interception occurred at about 12:30 p.m. on July 2 during a routine security operation conducted by troops of the 221 Battalion at Wawa town, according to intelligence sources familiar with the operation.
Sources said the troops stopped the armoured vehicle during routine checks and requested documents authorising its movement.
The driver reportedly informed the soldiers that he was transporting the vehicle to its owner in Abuja.
However, security sources disclosed that he was unable to provide a satisfactory explanation for the movement of the vehicle and presented what he claimed was an End User Certificate purportedly issued by a top security agency.
Military authorities subsequently detained the driver pending further investigation.
According to the sources, the authenticity of the End User Certificate and the legality of the vehicle's movement are currently being verified by the relevant authorities.
Both the driver and the armoured vehicle have been taken into custody while investigations continue.
Security agencies are expected to determine whether all regulatory requirements governing the ownership, documentation, and transportation of the armoured vehicle were fully complied with.
Military sources said investigators are working to establish the ownership of the armoured vehicle and verify whether the documents presented are genuine.
The investigation will also determine whether appropriate approvals were obtained before the vehicle was moved across state boundaries.
Authorities have not announced any criminal charges against the driver, and no official conclusion has been reached regarding the legality of the vehicle or its documentation.
The interception forms part of ongoing security operations under Operation SAVANNAH SHIELD, which is aimed at strengthening security across the North Central region through intelligence-led patrols and monitoring of sensitive security assets.
Military authorities say the operation is designed to curb illegal arms-related activities, prevent the unlawful movement of restricted equipment, and enhance public safety.
