Gunmen attack a community guard post in Gwa Rim, Riyom LGA, Plateau State, killing three vigilantes keeping watch overnight, in the latest of several attacks on Riyom's local security volunteers this month.
Riyom, Plateau State — August 27, 2026
Three members of a local vigilante group were killed after gunmen attacked a community guard post in Gwa Rim, Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State, at around 2 a.m. on Wednesday.
Resident Damba Dang, who confirmed the incident, said attackers struck while the community slept, opening fire on vigilantes stationed at the post. He described the killings as a fresh blow to a community already on edge, and appealed to security agencies to urgently strengthen patrols and surveillance around Gwa Rim and other vulnerable Riyom communities.
This is at least the third fatal attack on Riyom vigilantes this month alone, following the August 4-5 killing of three brothers on night patrol in Tarai community and other recent incidents targeting local security volunteers across the LGA, underscoring the mounting personal risk faced by residents who have taken up community defense in the absence of a fuller state security presence.
