President Bola Tinubu has inaugurated what is being described as Africa's first renewable energy college, the Barefoot Renewable Energy College (BARECKS), alongside a Green Hydrogen Research and Demonstration Pilot Plant, both sited at the Confluence University of Science and Technology in Osara, Kogi State.
The president, represented at the event by Vice President Kashim Shettima, described the new institution as a world-class facility that positions Nigeria at the forefront of clean-energy education on the continent.
Speaking at the commissioning, the vice president noted that the real measure of government lies in the industries it builds and the households those industries ultimately serve.
He pointed to Nigeria's long-standing struggle to convert its energy resources into usable power, and power into jobs, stressing that facilities like BARECKS are designed to close that gap by training the workforce needed to build and sustain Africa's renewable energy future.
The Green Hydrogen pilot plant is expected to serve as a demonstration and research hub, supporting Nigeria's broader push into alternative energy sources as the country looks to diversify beyond fossil fuels.
