The FCT Police Command has launched a multi-agency rescue operation after receiving a distress call reporting the collapse of a building on Abidjan Street, Wuse Zone 3, Abuja, at approximately 7:45 p.m. on Sunday.
A police response team led by Assistant Commissioner of Police, Department of Operations, ACP Edward Akaniyene, and Area Commander, Metro, ACP Georgelyn Ufomadu, promptly responded to the scene.
They were joined by personnel from the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Federal Roads Maintenance Agency (FERMA), Federal Fire Service, the Department of State Services, and the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), who immediately commenced search and rescue operations.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the collapsed structure had previously been marked and sealed by the Department of Development Control, Abuja, suggesting the building may have already been flagged as structurally unsafe or non-compliant prior to the collapse.
As of the police statement, no victims had been confirmed, though search and rescue operations remain ongoing to identify and rescue any persons who may still be trapped in the rubble.
