Efforts by troops of Operation Enduring Peace (OPEP) to broker a peaceful settlement between farmers and herders over a farm destruction incident in Kwatas Village, Bokkos Local Government Area, have ended without an agreement, with the matter now referred to police for formal handling.
Following the failed mediation, the case file and the cattle confiscated during the dispute have been handed over to the Keystone Bokkos Divisional Police Command for further investigation and appropriate legal action.
Kwatas has repeatedly featured in Plateau's long-running farmer-herder tensions, having recorded multiple violent incidents in past years tied to disputes over cattle rustling, grazing, and crop destruction.
The area sits within the broader Bokkos-Mangu corridor, which has recorded some of Plateau's deadliest attacks in recent years, including the mass-casualty violence in Jwak Maitumbi and Binper communities earlier this month.
OPEP has increasingly relied on on-the-spot mediation to resolve farmer-herder disputes before they escalate into broader violence, as seen in similar interventions this year in Barkin Ladi's Kwi area.
That this particular case could not be resolved amicably, and instead required formal police referral, underscores the persistent difficulty of achieving lasting reconciliation in communities where trust between farming and herding populations remains deeply strained.
