Senate orders crackdown on bandits flaunting crime cash on TikTok

Social media influencer Blessing Okoro, popularly known by her online persona "Blessing CEO," is at the center of a widening criminal investigation as both the Delta State Police Command and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) confirm they have received petitions and commenced preliminary inquiries into allegations of fraud and forgery against her.

The controversy stems from Okoro's public claims that she was battling cancer—assertions that reportedly moved followers to donate millions of naira in support. However, mounting inconsistencies in her narrative have triggered public outrage and formal legal action, with a cancer survivor now alleging that the influencer doctored her personal medical report to lend credibility to the fabricated diagnosis.

Speaking in an interview with Saturday PUNCH, the Police Public Relations Officer for Delta State Command, Edefa Bright, confirmed receipt of formal complaints. "We acknowledge the petitions; we are waiting for the complainants to come and give us their statement. We will thereafter investigate," Bright said.

Similarly, the Head of Media and Publicity at the EFCC, Dele Oyewale, told journalists that the anti-graft agency has taken cognizance of the matter. "There was a petition submitted; we received it and we are going to look into it. Whatever comes out of our findings will determine our next line of action," Oyewale stated.

The allegations against Okoro took a definitive turn after the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) in Delta State publicly disowned the histology report she had circulated as proof of her illness. According to the NMA, the document in question was originally issued on May 9, 2025, by Xinus Medical Diagnostics in Asaba to one Deborah Mbara, a confirmed breast cancer survivor, following a referral for a confirmatory diagnostic test.

Deborah Mbara, who operates a beauty business in Asaba, has since come forward with a detailed account of how the influencer allegedly obtained and manipulated her confidential medical record. In a video statement posted on Instagram, Mbara explained that she first encountered Okoro in 2025 while working as her make-up artist. She later reached out to offer moral support upon seeing Okoro's public claims of grappling with stage four cancer.

"She requested to see my own medical report to compare with hers, and I gave it to her in good faith," Mbara recounted. "I never imagined it would be used to deceive the public."

The situation escalated further when, during a recent interview with social media personality Egungun of Lagos, Okoro reportedly walked back her stage four cancer claims and admitted to raising approximately N13 million from public donations. She maintained, however, that she owed no apology to anyone.

In response, Mbara has engaged legal counsel, and a formal petition has been submitted to the EFCC through her lawyer, Sunny Anyanwu, urging a comprehensive investigation into the alleged forgery and financial misconduct.
