ABUJA, Nigeria – The Nigerian Baptist Convention (NBC)
has called on President Bola Tinubu to urgently and decisively confront the
country's worsening insecurity, stating that recurring mass burials across
multiple states are “totally unacceptable and reprehensible.”
Speaking during the convention’s 113th annual
session in Abuja on April 17, 2026, NBC President Dr. Israel Akanji cited
ongoing killings, kidnappings, and banditry in Plateau (including Jos, Bokkos,
Barkin Ladi, and Bassa), Benue, Niger, Kogi, Kwara, Katsina, Kebbi, Zamfara,
and Borno states.
“The menace of insecurity … occasioned by the
seemingly endless, senseless, brutal, torturous and unprovoked killings, which
has been termed genocide, have become totally unbearable,” Akanji said.
He acknowledged that the current
administration inherited a compromised security architecture but urged Tinubu
to overcome the crisis with urgency. Akanji also called on the judiciary and
police to accelerate arrests and prosecutions of perpetrators, warning against
impunity and “lip service” to the deteriorating situation.
The convention commended security agencies for
their efforts so far but said more must be done.
No immediate response from the presidency or
