After weeks of preparation, Nigerian athletes will tomorrow begin their quest for honours at the 2026 World Athletics Relays holding in Gaborone, Botswana. The competition runs from 2 to 3 May and serves as a qualification pathway to the 2026 World Athletics Ultimate Championships in Budapest and the World Athletics Championships in Beijing 2027.
A total of 24 athletes will represent Nigeria in all six relay events at the competition. Some members of the Team Nigeria squad left for Gaborone on Monday, while five others joined them in the early hours of yesterday. The Director General of the National Sports Commission, Bukola Olapade, also arrived in the city to cheer the athletes to victory.
Among the biggest talking points in the Nigerian squad is the inclusion of sprint star Favour Ashe in the men's 4x100m relay team. Ashe, a Commonwealth Games bronze medallist, returns to national duty after months of speculation linking him with a possible allegiance switch to Qatar. A source in the team's camp confirmed: "Yes, Ashe is here, and he is ready for the World Relay."
The 23-year-old headlines a strong sprint team that also features Enoch Adegoke, who reached the final of the men's 100m at the Tokyo Olympics, alongside James Taiwo Emmanuel and Chidera Ezeakor. Nigeria's 4x400m ambitions will be boosted by the presence of Chidi Okezie, the All-African Games gold medallist. In the women's category, Nigeria will rely heavily on the speed of Blessing Ogundiran, currently the joint fastest woman in the world this year after clocking 10.98 seconds in the 100m last weekend.
Speaking before his departure for Botswana, Olapade emphasised the importance of discipline, unity, and determination, noting that the World Relays provides a crucial platform for Nigeria to reinforce its pedigree in international athletics. "The entire nation stands firmly behind you. We have absolute faith in your ability to deliver and make Nigeria proud," he assured the athletes.
