Rescue workers in Abuja are in a race against time to pull survivors from the rubble of a three‑storey building that collapsed in the early hours of Saturday while under construction. As of Sunday morning, the Federal Capital Territory Emergency Management Agency confirmed that five bodies have been recovered, and at least eight injured persons were extracted alive and rushed to the National Hospital. Officials fear that more people remain trapped beneath the debris.
The building, located in a densely populated area, collapsed without warning around 3 a.m. Residents living nearby reported hearing a loud rumble followed by screams. “We rushed out and saw the entire structure had come down. Some of the workers were sleeping on the ground floor, and they didn’t have time to escape,” said a witness who gave his name as Chinedu. The building was reportedly being developed by a private company, and preliminary findings suggest that substandard materials and violations of the approved plan may have contributed to the collapse.
The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, visited the site and ordered an immediate investigation. He directed the FCT Development Control Department to seal off the site and prosecute the developers if negligence is established. “We will not tolerate anyone who cuts corners and endangers lives,” Wike said. The Nigerian Society of Engineers has called for stricter enforcement of building codes, noting that building collapses have become far too frequent.
The National Emergency Management Agency is coordinating the rescue effort with the support of the military, the Fire Service, and the Nigerian Red Cross. Search operations are ongoing, and the final casualty figures may not be known for another 24 hours.
