Senate orders crackdown on bandits flaunting crime cash on TikTok

Seventeen Nigeria Police Force personnel undergoing a specialised counter‑terrorism course at the Army Special Forces School in Buni Yadi were killed in the early hours of Saturday when heavily armed ISWAP fighters stormed the facility in a multi‑axis night assault. The Police High Command, in a statement issued on Sunday, described the attack as a “cowardly and devastating” blow, adding that several soldiers and instructors also paid the supreme sacrifice while gallantly defending the base.

The attackers, estimated to number over 100, approached the camp in gun trucks and on motorcycles, simultaneously breaching the perimeter from three directions. Intense fighting lasted for nearly two hours before reinforcements arrived. The Police statement confirmed that the 17 slain officers were part of a mobile police unit undergoing advanced weapons and tactics training ahead of deployment to frontline areas. Their bodies have been evacuated to the Specialist Hospital in Damaturu, while the injured are receiving treatment at a military medical facility.

Buni Yadi, located in Gujba Local Government Area, has been repeatedly targeted by ISWAP because of its strategic position along the Yobe‑Borno corridor. The attack demonstrates the group’s continued ability to mobilise large numbers and strike hard targets despite recent losses inflicted by military operations. The Inspector‑General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has declared a three‑day mourning period for the fallen officers and ordered an immediate review of security protocols around all police training facilities.

President Tinubu, in a condolence message, described the fallen officers as “heroes who died in the service of our fatherland” and vowed that their sacrifice would not be in vain. The military has reinforced the Buni Yadi base and launched clearance patrols to track the fleeing attackers.
