Five people have lost their lives following the collapse of a building in the Gudu area of the Federal Capital Territory, prompting a swift response from the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, who has ordered a full-scale investigation and announced the arrest of an engineer linked to the project.
The collapse occurred on Sunday evening, according to eyewitness accounts. Emergency responders from the FCT Emergency Management Agency and the National Emergency Management Agency worked through the night to pull survivors and recover bodies from the rubble. Five bodies had been recovered as of Monday morning, with several others rescued and rushed to hospitals.
Minister Wike, who visited the scene on Monday, expressed anger at the lax enforcement of building regulations. "This is unacceptable. We have sealed the premises and arrested the engineer involved. The developer will also be arrested. We will get to the bottom of this and ensure that anyone found culpable faces the full weight of the law," Wike said.
The Minister announced the constitution of a panel of inquiry to investigate the immediate and remote causes of the collapse. He directed the FCT Development Control Department to immediately conduct integrity tests on all adjoining buildings and to intensify monitoring of construction sites across the capital city.
Building collapses have become a recurring tragedy in Nigeria's major cities, often attributed to the use of substandard materials, poor workmanship, and the circumvention of regulatory approvals. The FCT Administration has vowed to enforce stricter penalties to deter violations.
