Suspected members of the Lakurawa terror group ambushed and killed seven Nigerian soldiers at Runji village in Illela Local Government Area of Sokoto State on Saturday evening, in an attack that underscores the growing threat posed by the extremist sect in the North-West.
According to local sources who spoke to Prime Brief Media on condition of anonymity, the troops were returning from a clearance operation against a Lakurawa encampment when one of their patrol vehicles developed a mechanical fault. As the soldiers worked to repair the vehicle, the insurgents struck from a concealed position, opening fire and killing seven personnel. Several others were wounded and have been evacuated to a military medical facility.
The Defence Headquarters had not issued a formal statement at the time of this briefing, but a military officer familiar with the incident confirmed the casualty figure and said reinforcements were deployed to the area. "A manhunt is underway. The group responsible will be brought to account," the officer said.
The Lakurawa group, which emerged in the border areas between Nigeria and Niger, has been responsible for a series of deadly attacks on security forces and civilians in recent months. The military's Operation Hadarin Daji has intensified air and ground campaigns against the group, but its fighters continue to exploit the vast, ungoverned forest reserves along the border.
