Senate orders crackdown on bandits flaunting crime cash on TikTok

Amnesty International has reported that a Nigerian Air Force airstrike on Sunday killed at least 100 civilians at a busy market in the Zurmi area of Zamfara State, making it one of the deadliest incidents of its kind in recent Nigerian history.

According to the rights organisation, eyewitnesses stated that fighter jets were seen flying over Tumfa market around noon. The jets returned about two hours later and dropped bombs on the crowded market, killing mostly civilians who had gathered for trading activities. “This is utterly horrific. The Nigerian authorities must immediately launch an independent, transparent investigation into this incident. Those responsible must be held to account,” Amnesty said in a statement.

Zamfara has been a theatre of intense military operations against bandit groups. However, repeated incidents of civilian casualties from aerial bombardments have raised questions about intelligence accuracy and rules of engagement. Community sources told Prime Brief Media that the market served several villages and that the dead included women and children.

The Nigerian Air Force had not issued a statement at the time of this briefing. The military has previously insisted that all airstrikes are based on credible intelligence and that great care is taken to avoid civilian harm. However, Amnesty's account, if confirmed, would represent a catastrophic failure of that principle.
