Senate orders crackdown on bandits flaunting crime cash on TikTok

The Defence Headquarters announced on Monday that an airstrike on 10 May killed at least 70 suspected terrorists in Shiroro Local Government Area of Niger State. The operation is now mired in controversy after residents reported that civilians fleeing the armed groups were also killed.

Major General Michael Onoja, Director of Defence Media Operations, briefed journalists in Abuja that the drone strike was part of sustained operations against bandit and terrorist hideouts. “Based on reliable intelligence, our platforms targeted five identified hideouts with precision. Over 70 terrorists were neutralised in the operation,” Onoja said.

The military did not comment on claims of civilian casualties.

However, residents of Guradnayi told journalists that a missile landed on a group of displaced civilians who had fled from nearby Kusasu village after terrorists had ordered them to leave.

“We had run from the terrorists, only for the bomb to meet us where we thought we were safe,” one survivor said.

The exact number of civilian dead remains disputed, but community sources put the figure at no fewer than 12.

The development comes as security forces intensify air operations across the North-West and North-Central zones. Rights organisations have repeatedly urged the military to ensure better distinction between combatants and civilians. A full investigation is expected.
