The All Progressives Congress faces the imminent risk of a coordinated internal rebellion that could fracture the ruling party and severely undermine its prospects in the 2027 general elections, according to a report published by Daily Sun on Monday.
Citing multiple sources within the party, the report indicates that a large number of aspirants who have been "trapped" by controversial screening outcomes, consensus impositions, and logistical delays are considering mass defections to opposition platforms. The postponement of the House of Representatives primaries to Saturday, 16 May, and the collapse of consensus arrangements in several states are said to have deepened the discontent.
"Unless the national leadership acts swiftly to address these grievances, the APC will face a revolt. These are not fringe aspirants; they are people with structures, resources, and followership. They can cause serious damage," a senior party official told the newspaper.
Particular flashpoints include Niger, Taraba, and Nasarawa states, where consensus arrangements collapsed, as well as Rivers State, where a controversial screening list sparked a public row. Some aspirants accuse powerful state governors of manipulating the process to install anointed successors.
President Bola Tinubu has urged consensus and inclusion, but his message has not yet translated into calm on the ground. The APC National Working Committee is under mounting pressure to ensure that the remaining primaries Senate, governorship, and presidential are conducted transparently.
