Senate orders crackdown on bandits flaunting crime cash on TikTok

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has issued a scathing condemnation of the Federal Government's handling of insecurity following the death of former House of Representatives member, Hon. Abba Anas Adamu, who died in the custody of his bandit abductors on Monday, 12 May 2026. Adamu, a former lawmaker, was abducted along the Kaduna-Abuja highway on 3 May. Despite frantic efforts by his family to negotiate his release, he died in captivity nine days later.

In a statement released by his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication, Phrank Shaibu, Atiku described the killing as "yet another grim reminder of the worsening collapse of security under the Tinubu administration." The former Vice President said the nation's security situation had deteriorated beyond a crisis into "a cruel national routine." He added, "Let us be brutally honest: Nigeria is under siege, and the Tinubu administration appears either overwhelmed, indifferent, or dangerously incompetent in the face of this national emergency."

Atiku decried the brazen nature of the abduction on one of Nigeria's most strategic highways. "When a former member of the National Assembly can be abducted on one of the country's most strategic highways and die in captivity, what hope remains for the ordinary Nigerian who lacks visibility, influence, or protection?" he asked. The statement went on to paint a grim picture of the daily fear experienced by citizens: "We now travel with prayers instead of protection. Families sleep with one eye open. Communities are abandoned to the mercy of gunmen." Atiku called on the government to treat the security collapse as the emergency it is, demanding "decisive leadership, coherent action, and measurable results."

The Kaduna State Government confirmed Adamu's death and expressed condolences to his family. The late lawmaker, who represented a constituency in the state, was described as a respected community leader. Security agencies have yet to provide details on the circumstances of his death, and it remains unclear whether a ransom was paid.
